Ben Nicholson (Nicholson Ben)

(1894-1982)
His creative vision was formed between the two world wars. In his works he used to superimposed shapes connected by lines incised in the plane.
Son of the famous English painter and engraver, Sir William Nicholson, Ben Nicholson was born April 10, 1894 in Deneme (Buckinghamshire). In 1910-1911 he studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts. In 1920 visited Paris, where he met with a synthetic cubism. In 1931, Nicholson began experimenting with carved geometric reliefs, which sought to preserve the natural nerohovatost surface (white reliefs). Nicholson brought the abstraction to its logical extreme with the same thoroughness as his friend Piet Mondrian.

During the Second World War and during the next 17 years, Nicholson was living in St. Ives in Cornwall. Nature, light and almost musical dialogue sea and land, it seems, helped to mitigate his severe style. In the late reliefs Nicholson reappear color and 'beautiful' effect. Nicholson died in London on February 6, 1982.
