Biography RABIN Itskah (Rabin Yitzhak)
(1922-1995) Born in Jerusalem, March 1, 1922. Rabin's father, a native of Russia, he emigrated first to the United States, and during the Second World War - in Palestine. Rabin studied agriculture in the Galilee town of Kfar Tavor, and when the Second World War began, joined Khagani. He fought against the Vichy in Syria and Lebanon. After the war, participated in operations against the British Haganaha. In 1946 he was arrested. During the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 Rabin commanded a brigade that defended Jerusalem, and fought with the Egyptians in the Negev. In 1954, Rabin became a brigadier general, commanded the Israeli Defense Forces, then Chief of General Staff. Commanded the army during the Six Day War in 1967. Resigned from the armed forces in January 1968.
In 1968-1973 Rabin - Israeli Ambassador to the U.S.. In March 1973 he became a member of the Knesset. When the Government of Golda Meir resigned in April 1974, the Labor Party asked Rabin to form a new cabinet. Rabin resigned as prime minister and party leader in April 1977.
He returned to politics in 1984 and became defense minister in the government of 'national unity', which included representatives of the Labor Party and Likud. In 1987, Rabin had ordered the Israeli army to respond to the intifada 'power, strength and strikes', reinforcing its reputation as a hard policy. In February 1992, was replaced by Shimon Peres as leader of the Labor Party. Four months later, Rabin led the Labor Party has been successful in national elections. Rabin was approved as prime minister July 13, 1992, after the formed three-party center-left coalition government. In September 1993, signed an agreement with Yasser Arafat on the introduction of limited Palestinian self-rule, followed by a withdrawal of Israeli troops from most of Gaza and Jericho in the West Bank. The peace process has moved in October 1994, when Rabin and King Hussein of Jordan signed a peace treaty and the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Rabin was assassinated in Tel Aviv on Nov. 4, 1995.
