Wallace Edward Rowling (Rowling Wallace Edward)

(1927-1995)
Born November 15, 1927 in the town Motuka in the north-western tip of South Island, where his father headed the local branch of the Labor Party. Defended his master's thesis in economics, Rowling received a Fulbright scholarship, which allowed to engage in teaching activities in the U.S.. In 1962 took place in the New Zealand Parliament. In 1969 he was elected vice-president of the Labor Party, 1970 became its president. In 1972, Rowling has joined the cabinet of Prime Minister Norman Kirk (as Minister of Finance). September 6, 1974, a week after the sudden death of Kirk was elected as his successor. Resigned after the defeat of Labor in elections in 1975, but remained party leader until 1983. In 1985-1988 he was Ambassador of New Zealand in the United States, 1990-1995 - President of the New Zealand Institute of International Relations. Rowling died in Nelson on Oct. 31, 1995.
