Biography BROUWER Max (Brauer)
Brauer, Max (Brauer), (1888-1973), German Social Democrat Mayor of Hamburg in 1924-33. With the advent of the Nazis to power Brower has been repeatedly harassed and arrested by the authorities, but nevertheless refused to cooperate with the new regime. He was forced to leave Germany and moved to China where he was the representative of the League of Nations, then settled in the U.S.. In 1946 he returned home and again took the post of Mayor of Hamburg. In 1961 he was elected to the Bundestag, retired in 1965. Brower died Feb. 2, 1973 in Hamburg.
