Butenandt, Adolf Friedrich Johann

Butenandt, Adolf Friedrich JOHANN (Butenandt, Adolf Friedrich Johann) (1903-1995), German biochemist. Born March 24, 1903 in Bremerhaven-Lee. He studied in Marburg and GцІttingen (1924-1927). He worked at the University of GцІttingen (1931-1933), the Higher Technical School in Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) (1933-1936). Headed the Institute of Biochemistry in Berlin (1936-1944), Tц?bingen (1944-1956) and Munich (from 1956). In 1931, first obtained in crystalline form (nezaivimo from L. Ruzicka), a male hormone androsterone, and studied its chemical structure, synthesized later, a second male sex hormone - testosterone (1939). In the same year of the so-called 'yellow body' in the ovaries identified in crystalline form a new substance, synthesized it in 1934 and named progesterone. In 1961, highlighted hormone insect pheromone, developed a method of producing cortisone. For the study of sex hormones Butenantdtu (with Ruzicka) in 1939 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Management Nazi Germany forbade him to receive the prize, and only 10 years later, he was able to come to Stockholm, where he was awarded a gold medal and a diploma laureate. Butenantdt was president of the Max Planck Society in Munich (1960-1972).
