GREGORY (Isabella) August

Gregory (Isabella) AUGUST (Gregory, [Isabella] Augusta) (1852-1932), Irish playwright, folklorist, theater director. Born March 15, 1852 in Roksboro (County Galway, Ireland). Maiden name - Persian (Persse). In 1881 she married William Gregory and moved to Cool (same county). In 1898, together with E. Martin and W. B. Yeats founded the Irish Literary Theater, which later became the core of Dublin's Abbey Theater, artistic directors of which were Yeats and Lady Gregory. In addition to the set of translated works, Lady Gregory has written more than thirty original - mostly one-act comedies. The best known are "rumors" (Spreading the News, . 1904), . "Hyacinth Galway" (Hyacinth Halvey, . 1906), . "On the moon" (The Rising of the Moon, . 1907), . "The room in the house" (The Workhouse Ward, . 1908) and "Story Brigita" (The Story Brought by Brigit, . 1924),
. The basis of some pieces laid the motives of the Irish legends. In his book "Our Irish Theater" (Our Irish Theatre, 1913) Lady Gregory tells of his involvement in the birth of Irish drama.

Also published two volumes of Irish epic tales - K uhulin of Murtemne "(Cuchulain of Muirthemne, 1902) and" Gods and Warriors "(Gods and Fighting Men, 1904). In 1946 it published "Diaries" (Journals).

Gregory died in Gort (Galway County) May 22, 1932.
