Elton Mayo was born on December 26, 1880 in Adelaide (South Australia) and was the second child of respectable colonists. It was expected that he would follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and choose to become a doctor. But he showed himself at the university and was sent to the UK. There, in Scotland, he continued to study medicine and psychopathology. Great influence on the formation of his views have had ideas of Durkheim and Freud. Then Mayo returned to Australia to work in Adelaide. Even then, he has published material on management, but there are his views on management were unpopular. Mayo resumed his studies at the university and specialized in the study of ethics and logic. In addition, it was called the most brilliant student of the philosopher Sir William Mitchell. Academic careers of Elton Mayo in Australia was successful. In 1911-1921 Mayo professor of logic, psychology and ethics, and then professor of philosophy and psychology at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia). Soon, he went on a business trip to Britain, but on the oral agreement will remain in the United States, where he worked on several projects. When the university refused to renew his trip, he stayed in the United States without means. Then, within six months he received financial support from the John D. Rockefeller Foundation, and in 1923 entered the School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1926, Mayo was promoted to associate professor and head of the department of industrial research at Harvard University. Significant contribution to the sociology of management and industrial sociology have made the famous Hawthorne experiments Mayo in the company 'Western Electric' near Chicago (1927-1932 gg.).
