Biography SHOSTAKOVICH Dmitri
(1906-1975)

Russian composer of the Soviet period, the distinctive features of his style - intense rhythms, varied and often original use of orchestral resources, high tension drama, original musical humor. Works by Shostakovich is magnified by the power, then subjected to sharp criticism. His symphonies, particularly the Fifth and Seventh, as well as a number of piano compositions have been recognized worldwide.
Dmitri Shostakovich was born on September 25, 1906 in St. Petersburg. At 13 he entered the Petrograd Conservatory, where he focused on piano with LVNikolaev, in harmony with NA Sokolova and composition at MO Steinberg. Even in years of study composed the first symphony, which, together with three fantastic dances for piano, became his first published works. First Symphony, warmly greeted by critics after the premiere, carried out the Leningrad Philharmonic in 1926, soon became known outside of the country.

The Second Symphony was far less successful, and the composer has directed its efforts at the opera genre. But his first experience in this area - the nose, on the fantastic tale of Gogol (1928-1929), demonstrate and theatrical flair, and the satirical talent of the author, still was not a masterpiece. Shostakovich continued to work hard, . and the age of thirty in his creative portfolio there were many opuses: works for piano and string instruments, . for voice and piano, . four symphonies, . Three Ballet, . two operas and a number of scores for film and dramatic theater,
. Shostakovich's first ballet, The Golden Age, a great success. His second opera, . Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in Leskov's story with bleak, . bloody plot, . brilliantly held at the premiere in Leningrad on Jan. 22, 1934, . but after a while, . 1936, . wrecked in the official press for the 'lack of simple and straightforward melodies' and indulging perverted tastes of bourgeois listeners' his twitchy, . clamorous, . neurasthenic music ',
. This harsh sentence, . published in the pages of the central Soviet newspaper Pravda (editorial called Confusion, instead of music), . some time served as an obstacle to performing music by Shostakovich, . but the great Fifth Symphony, . first played the Leningrad Philharmonic on Nov. 21, 1937, . fully rehabilitated to its author,
. Sixth Symphony appeared in 1939, while work on the famous Seventh was launched in besieged Leningrad in 1941. In 1942 Shostakovich received the Stalin Prize for this essay, which, according to the composer's later statements, he embodied the courage of his countrymen in the face of a war and Stalinist terror.

Composer once again fell into disfavor in 1948: his music was described as formalistic and decadent. As examples of 'typical formalism' (ie. art, incomprehensible to the people and alien to him) mentioned Eighth and Ninth Symphony, written in the period 1943-1945. Shostakovich dutifully took accusations addressed to him, and this saved him from more serious consequences of party criticism. Also in 1948 he received official encouragement for 'realistic' and 'democratic' music for the film The Young Guard. Shostakovich's Thirteenth Symphony is known as Babi Yar, and is a vocal-symphonic cycle to poems by Yevtushenko EA. Shostakovich died in Moscow on August 9, 1975.
