Born in Conway, South Carolina. In 1968, refusing to appeal, he emigrated to Canada, where he lived first in Toronto, and since 1972 - in Vancouver. The debut publication - the story "Fragments of holographic Rose" (1977). In the first half of the 80's, among other stories, published "Johnny Mnemonic" (1981) and "Burning Chrome" (1982), which virtually opened a new trend in fiction, later called "cyberpunk".
In 1984 Gibson published the novel "Neuromancer," which became the main canonical "cyberpunk" of large-scale forms. Gibson, . not having at that time virtually no computer experience, . put forward and developed the idea of virtual reality, . which has been technically implemented in a few years after that - with the priority of ideas Gibson recognized by all developers, . Gibson's prose has a strong socio-psychological and socio-philosophical character, he is considered one of the best stylists of contemporary American literature. Winner of prizes Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Prize.
