Biography Gilyarov Mercury S.
1912-1985 Born in g. Kiev in a family readership. He graduated from Kiev University in 1933. In his university years, he worked under the guidance of eminent evolutionary biologist I.I. Schmalhausen. After graduation he worked in the agricultural institutions in Ukraine and in 1936, Mr.. - G. Moscow, the first All-Union Institute of the resin, and from 1944. until the end of life at the Institute of Evolutionary Morphology of Animals. AN. Severtsova (now the Institute of Ecology and Evolution RAS), which organized and headed the Laboratory of Soil Zoology. Since 1977, Mr.. before the death of ms. Gilyarov was head of the department of zoology and comparative anatomy of invertebrates MSU.
Academician ms. Gilyarov - founder of a new direction of biological science - Soil Zoology. Under his leadership, dozens of expeditions conducted in all regions of the USSR, collected and processed by a colossal material on soil invertebrates, issued a fundamental determinant of insect larvae. Ms. Gilyarov published the Zoological method for diagnosis of soil, an award the State Prize of the USSR. Like his teacher I.I. Schmalhausen who created the concept of the origin of terrestrial vertebrates, ms. Gilyarov developed in detail the problem of adaptation of arthropods to life on land.
Ms. Gilyarov led a huge organizational work in the Academy of Sciences. For many years he was chairman of the National Committee of Soviet biologists, . Acting academician-secretary of the total bi-ologii Academy of Sciences, . was chief editor of the Journal of General Biology ", . led a variety of committees, . Commissions, . scientific societies in our country, . and abroad.,
. Ms . Gilyarov was brilliantly educated man fluent in major European languages. In the 50-70th years ms. Gilyarov was one of those of its international activities has prevented the isolation of Soviet science from the world scientific community. Ms. Gilyarov characterized by the highest, if I may say so, some "old regime" decency. Ms. Gilyarov held senior positions at the Academy of Sciences and by Soviet standards was a layer of state nomenclature (although not a member of the CPSU), but neither he nor his family never enjoyed any privileges. Ms. Gilyarov remained crystal clear example of thoughts and acts of generosity.
