Biography William Morris Hughes (Hughes William Morris)
(1862-1952) Born September 25, 1862 in London. Educated at a local school and at Westminster. Since 1894 was elected for several consecutive terms in the parliament of New South Wales, and then - in the federal parliament. In 1908-1909, 1910-1913 and 1914-1921 was Attorney General. In October 1915, after Fisher's resignation, became prime minister. He tried to introduce universal military service. Took part in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.
Against the background of the rapid decline in popularity after his return from Europe, and Hughes lost political power after losing elections in February 1923. During the Second World War was a member of the advisory council of war (1941-1945). Hughes died in Sydney October 28, 1952.
