CHESS Alexei Alexandrovich (1864-1920), Russia scholar, academician Petersburg AN (1894). Researcher of the Russian language, in t. h. its dialects, Old Russian literature, Russian chronicle, the problems of Russian and Slavic ethnogeny, questions and ancestral proto-language. Laid the foundation for historical study of Russian literary language, the science of textual criticism. Proceedings of Indo-European languages (in m. h. Slavic), and Finnish languages Mordovia. Editor of the academic 'Dictionary of Russian Language "(1891-1916).
