Placido Domingo recovering after colon surgery
Famous Spanish tenor Placido Domingo is recovering well after successfully undergoing laparoscopic surgery to remove a malignant polyp in his colon, his representative said.
The 69-year-old general director of the Los Angeles Opera and the Washington National Opera was discharged Sunday from Mount Sinai Hospital of New York City and is expected to make a full recovery in about six weeks, Nancy Seltzer said.
Domingo`s surgery was scheduled after he experienced lower abdominal pain for more than a week during his concert performances in Tokyo in February.
The opera star could return to the stage as early as next month when he his expected to perform one of the most demanding baritone roles in Verdi`s "Simon Boccanegra" at La Scala in Milan, Italy, on April 16.
Domingo is known for his versatile and strong voice, possessing a ringing and dramatic tone throughout its range. In March 2008, he debuted in his 128th opera role, giving him more roles than any other tenor in the world.
