Brod distinguish critical and speculative philosophy, involving different subjects and research methods. From his point of view, the main task of critical philosophy is to clarify the meaning of such general concepts as 'cause', 'modified', 'place' and 'thing'. These concepts are constantly used in everyday life and science, but nowhere, except philosophy, they are not explicitly the subject of study. The usual understanding of them 'very complicated', and when we find ourselves in unfamiliar situations, you do not know how justified their use. Example, . though we know the everyday meaning of 'place', . but get up to a dead end with the question: 'In what place is a mirror image of a pin? " The task of critical philosophy is to clarify the meaning of words with the analysis and determination,
. Critical philosophy also analyzes the fundamental assumptions of science, such as the assumption that every change has a cause.

Speculative philosophy is more ambitious in its aims, seeking to construct a theory of the universe, which takes into account the results of various sciences, and the implications of our moral and religious experience. Skeptical Brod, his love of precision in thought and expression, calls for a thorough inspection of their - all this led to his interest shifted from the speculative problems to issues of critical philosophy. Last discussed in a number of his most explicit works: Perception, . physics and reality (Perception, . Physics, . and Reality, . 1914), Consciousness and Its Place in Nature (The Mind and Its Place in Nature, . 1925); Five types of ethical theory (Five Types of Ethical Theory, . 1930); study philosophy Mc Taggart (Examination of McTaggart's Philosophy, . 1933-1938), a collection of essays Ethics and History of Philosophy (Ethics and the History of Philosophy, . 1952) and lectures on parapsychology (Lectures on Psychical Research, . 1963),
