Biography Gavarni Paul (Gavarni Paul)
(1804-1866)
Born January 13, 1804 in Paris. His real name - Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier (Hippolyte Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier). Alias name comes from a village in the Pyrenees, where the artist worked in his youth. Gavarni worked in newspapers and satirical magazines, in particular in 'charivari'. He is known for many expressive drawings, lithographs and watercolors on everyday topics. Although the subjects of his works were almost as varied as that of Daumier's printed in the same journals, the choice of topics in Gavarni more limited and focused on fashion. In 1847-1851 he lived and worked in England, in magazine pictures depicting the life of the London slums; illustrated several books, including works of Honore de Balzac and the Wandering Jew E. Sue. Gavarni died in Paris on November 23, 1866.
Unfortunately, the reputation of the artist often suffered due to the fact that his paintings were known for bad prints. However, a large collection of his works housed at the National Library in Paris, and more than 2,700 lithographs show that Gavarni had a sharp observation and a brilliantly mastered the skill pattern.
