GALLI, Franz Josef (Gall Franz Joseph)

(1758-1828)
Born in Tiefenbronn (Germany), March 9, 1758. In 1785 he graduated from the Medical Faculty, University of Vienna. Practiced medicine in Vienna. By studying the activity of the nervous system, especially the brain, came to the conclusion that nature and human abilities are determined by the structure of his skull. Expounded his views in public lectures. In 1802 the Austrian authorities have banned these statements, believing that they undermine the religious foundations. In 1805, Gall was forced to leave Austria, together with his assistant Shpurtshaymom and lectured in various European countries. In 1807 settled in Paris, where he acquired fame as a physician. The ideas of phrenology, despite its failure, stimulated the study of morphology and physiology of the nervous system. Fruitful and was contained in this doctrine the idea of localization of functions in the brain. Halle belong anatomical studies of the nervous system, a description of the anatomy of the pyramidal tract in the brain. In his work The Anatomy and physiology of the nervous system in general and in particular the brain (Anatomie et physiologie du systme nerveux en gnral et du cerveau en particulier, 1810-1820) Gall summarized the data accumulated in this area. Gall died in Paris on August 22, 1828.
