Stefan Zheromsky (Zeromski Stefan)

(1864-1925)
Born October 14, 1864 in Kielce province in an impoverished gentry family. In Switzerland, in 1895 published under the pseudonym of Maurice Zych (Maurycy Zych) collection of stories Rasklyuet us crow (Rozdziobia nas kruki, wrony), portrays a grim picture of life in Poland after the failed uprising of 1863. In the first story Zeromski Sisyphean (Syzyfowe prace, 1898) describes the attempts to break the independent spirit of the Polish youth.
In subsequent works Zeromski national liberation motifs interwoven with the socio-political. The central theme of the novel Homeless (Ludzie bezdomni, 1900) - social injustice. The most famous novel Zeromski, Ash (Popioly, 1904) - an epic panorama of the life of the Poles during the Napoleonic Wars. Ethical and social issues raised by the contemporary history of the novel of sin (Dzieje grzechu, 1908) and in the trilogy fight with Satan (Walka z szatanem, 1916-1919).

Atmosphere of depression, which permeated much of the novels Zeromski noticeably dissipated in the works, written after Poland gained independence in 1918. However, in his latest novel, . Eve of spring (Przedwiosnie, . 1924), . there is a deep anxiety about the future of the nation; Zheromsky predicts, . that Poland was not until a new step on the path of radical social reforms, . impatient youth can easily fall prey to foreign extremists,
. Zheromsky published a lot of plays, but the success enjoyed only one - a comedy Gone from me quail (Uciekla mi przepireczka, 1924). Zheromsky died in Warsaw on November 20, 1925.
