CARY, Joyce (Cary Joyce)

(1888-1957)
Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary was born on Dec. 7, 1888 in Londonderry (Ireland). He graduated from Trinity College at Oxford University, where he received a bachelor's degree and then Master of Arts, was engaged in painting and studied art history at Edinburgh University and in Paris. In 1913 he joined the colonial administration of Nigeria, during the First World War, fought in the ranks of the Nigerian Army against the Germans. After the war he lived in West Africa, in 1920 for health reasons he returned to England. Carey's first novel, rescue Eisa (Aissa Saved), was published in 1932. Posthumously published novel, The Prisoner and free (The Captive and the Free, 1959), a collection of short stories Spring Song (Spring Song and Other Stories, 1960).

Carey died in Oxford, March 29, 1957.
