Biography RIVERA Jose Eustasio (Rivera Jos Eustasio)
(1889-1928) Born in the port city of Neiva on the shore of the Magdalena River. He received a law degree in Bogota, entered politics and literature, published his collection of sonnets Promised Land (Tierra de promision, 1921). In 1922 the Government appointed Rivera, secretary of the commission to clarify the border between Colombia and Venezuela. Impressions from the journey through the virgin forests of south-east of Colombia formed the basis for his famous novel Deeps (La vorgine, 1924). Art works of the conflict based on the contrast of human and natural life. Blind self-determination emphasizes the nature of falsehood and arbitrariness of human relations. Rivera died in New York on Dec. 1, 1928.
