Biography Maxime (Maximus)
Maxim from Tire; Maximus, II in. n. e., a wandering Greek orator and philosopher. He worked in Athens and in Rome (probably during the reign of Commodus). Well read in Greek literature, much less knew the philosophy, but Plato, whom he regarded as his teacher. His views were hardly original, he appropriates the ideas of other schools (except Epicureanism), especially the Cynics. He is the author of Lectures (Dialekseis), 41 philosophical and moralistic lectures, which are written in the Mannerist style, mainly with the calculation to produce the effect.
