Herbert Graf (Graf)

Graf, Herbert (Graf), (1903-1973), German theatrical director. In 1925 graduated from the University of Vienna, where he defended his thesis "Richard Wagner as director". Theater career began in Munster, then put opera in Breslau, Frankfurt, Basel and Prague. After the Nazis came to power in 1934, Graf had emigrated to the United States, where he was staging opera productions in Philadelphia. In 1936 he was invited to work at the Metropolitan Opera, where he staged numerous performances, for which he received worldwide recognition. His last production was "Elektra" Strauss (1967-68). Earl died in Geneva on 6 April 1973.
