Emil G. GILELS

Gilels, Emil GRIGORYEVICH (1916-1985), Russian pianist. Born in Odessa, 6 (19) October 1916. He began studying music since 5 years, in 1930-1935 he studied at the Odessa Conservatory in 1935-1938 at the School of Higher Performing Arts Conservatory in Moscow H. Neuhaus. He made his debut as a soloist in 1929 in Odessa. In 1933 I won the All-Russia competition of performing musicians, and 2 received the third prize at the international competition in Vienna (1936) and 1 st prize in the name E. Ysaye in Brussels (1938). In 1938-1976 he taught at the Moscow Conservatory. A lot - more than any Soviet artist - toured abroad.

Gilels extensive repertoire includes works by composers from the Baroque to the Present. Among the masterpieces that have become classics of world performing, - sonatas and concertos by Mozart, all the concerts of Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. He played well in the ensembles, including a trio with LB Kogan and Rostropovich. Interpretations Gilels, Executive 'objective' manner, every eschews frills and 'avtobiografizma', have always been exemplary in the sense of taste and skill. The Western press has often emphasized the aristocracy of his artistic personality, its 'spiritual isolation'.

Gilels died in Moscow on October 14, 1985.
