Biography CHIFLI Joseph Benedict (Chifley Joseph Benedict)
Born September 22, 1885 in Bathurst (NSW). Began political career in Bathurst, in 1928 was elected to Federal Parliament. In the period of depression support moderate centrist. In 1931 Chifli became defense minister and deputy minister of finance, but in the same year was defeated in the general parliamentary elections. In 1935-1937 was a member of the committee on banks, in 1939 organized the military production. In the general election in 1941 was re-elected to Parliament. In 1941 Chifli became finance minister in the government Dzh.Kertina.
After Curtin's death in July 1945 Chifli became prime minister. Implemented the Labor program to improve pensions, unemployment benefits, preferential and concessional medical education. The main achievement was Chifli banking legislation in 1945, . which gave Federal Bank Commonwealth powers, . associated with the control over the operations of private banks, . and Federal Minister of Finance has allowed full control of the Commonwealth Bank's policy,
. In 1947 Chifli has a law on the nationalization of banks. After the defeat of Labor in elections in 1949 Chifli became the leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Died Chifli in Canberra on 13 June 1951.
