Biography BULFINCH Charles (Bulfinch Charles)
(1763-1844)
Born Aug. 8, 1763 in Boston (pc. Mass.). After graduating from Harvard University in 1781, went to Europe, where he traveled a lot and improve their knowledge. Upon returning to his homeland in 1786 was commissioned to design the first in New England, a residential quarter with a single layout, known as Tontines-Kresnt (Boston). Bulfinch built several houses in the fashionable area of Beacon Hill in Boston, and in the age of 32 years has created a draft of a new administration building in Massachusetts (House staff). In 1818, U.S. President Dzh.Monro appointed him chief architect of the building of the U.S. Congress (Capitol in Washington, DC) instead of B. Latroba. First Bulfinchu had to rebuild those parts of the buildings that were burned by the British in 1814. Bulfinch is also the author of Houses of the State in Hartford (pc. Connecticut, 1792-1796) and Augusta (pc. Maine, 1829-1831). In 1830 he returned to Boston. Style Bulfincha is an original blend of Renaissance motifs and some parts borrowed from the buildings brothers Adam. Bulfinch died in Boston April 4, 1844.
