Biography Franz Joseph I (Franz Joseph I)
(1830-1916) Born August 18, 1830, son of Archduke Franz Karl, grandson of Franz II (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1792-1806 and under the name of Francis I, Emperor of Austria in 1804-1835). December 2, 1848, in the midst of revolutionary events, Franz Joseph took the throne instead of his mentally handicapped uncle Ferdinand I. He reigned for nearly 68 years and died in the Treaty of SchцІnbrunn Palace on Nov. 21, 1916. In his youth, Franz Joseph was influenced by the mother, becoming emperor, he married his cousin Elizabeth of Bavaria. They were born the son of Rudolph and three daughters, two of whom survived to adulthood. Kind-hearted, simple, known for his Spartan lifestyle, Franz Joseph was nevertheless ruthless to those politicians who lost his position.
Franz Joseph Theodore Roosevelt wrote of himself as the last European monarch in Europe. Imbued with the idea of the divine right of rulers to power, he reluctantly admitted constitutionalism and universal suffrage. Family life of Franz Josef is constantly accompanied by tragedies. His wife, an only son, heir presumptive (Franz Ferdinand) and brother died of sudden or violent death. His own death was a harbinger of the collapse of the Habsburg powers.
