Biography Topuria Varlam Trifonovich
Born January 8, 1901 in the village Ontopo in western Georgia. In 1922 he graduated from the University of Tiflis, taught (from 1926) there (since 1945 - Head of the Department novogruzinskogo language), worked at the Institute of Linguistics, Georgian SSR. Major works on the history of Kartvelian (phonetics and word formation), the Georgian dialectology, grammar Svan language. Topuria collected many Svan texts (in particular, folklore). Published several studies on the Lak language of Dagestan. Developing the methodology of teaching the Georgian language. Awarded the Order of Lenin, 2 other orders and medals.
Died Aug. 21, 1966 in Tbilisi.
