Biography STORM Charles Francois
(1803-1855) Born September 29, 1803 in Geneva. He graduated from Geneva College, was admitted to the Geneva Academy. He was awarded the prize in mathematics for work on the compressibility of liquids. In 1836 he was elected a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences. Since 1840 - professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, where he became the successor of C. Poisson. Works Sturm devoted mathematical physics. His name is connected with creation of the theory of string vibration, in which he, together with J. Liouville solved the problem of finding eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of ordinary differential equations (Sturm - Liouville). Among the works of Sturm - A Memoir of the numerical solution of differential equations (Mmoire sur la rsolution des quations, 1829); course analysis (Cours d `analyse de l'cole Polytechnique, 1857-1863); Mechanics Course (Cours de mchanique de l'cole Politechnique, 1861). Sturm died in Paris on December 18, 1855.
